November Meeting

Our November meeting featured the work of the Wildlife Hospital Trust. Jordana Whyte, the Manager of the Wildlife Hospital, told us about the patients they care for and the support they receive from the community.

The Wildlife Hospital Dunedin is based at Otago Polytechnic and is home to some of the world’s most unique and most threatened species. Their wildlife veterinary team treats a wide variety of native species, including parrots, penguins, reptiles, and sea lions. The hospital is crucial for the survival of many of these creatures.

We enjoyed seeing pictures of the “patients” in the wards and were amazed at the skill of the veterinarians who work there, and the ingenuity of the staff when making things to help healing. Who knew that pieces of yoga mat could help keep a bird’s feet flat so they didn’t injure themselves with their own claws, or putting a T-shirt on a penguin would ensure his feathers grew without him plucking them out.

It was a pleasure to have Jordana as our guest and we were pleased to be able to give a donation to help with Trust’s work.
