The second club meeting for 2022 has already passed, and the year is well underway. Tonight we enjoyed listening to Jacqui Hyde, former police officer and recipient of a Neighbourhood Support Project award for a safety project “Scam Savvy”. This project is spreading the ‘keep yourself safe from scammers’ message throughout the community.
Jacqui shared some examples of people, often elderly, who had come to her with stories of being tricked out of their money, often large amounts, and how the scammers had gained the confidence of their targets. It was a reminder to us to be vigilant when giving our details to anyone and always double-check who we are speaking to before answering personal questions. Don’t click on links in suspicious emails and check for secure sites when ordering and paying for goods online. Remember banks and similar organisations will never ask for your passwords, pin numbers or bank accounts details.
Our committees reported on some exciting events they are planning for this year. International Women’s Day in March is when we give the Zonta flower, a yellow rose, to women in the community. This year we acknowledge women working in the police service. Members also have the opportunity to deliver a virtual rose and message by email to a friend or colleague that they feel has made a positive contribution to the community.
